In a concerted effort to address the issue of individuals improperly claiming the designation of "Service Animal" for their pets in order to secure housing, board airplanes, or access restricted spaces such as restaurants and theaters, Texas lawmakers have successfully enacted a new piece of legislation. Known as Senate Bill H4161, this law establishes falsifying an animal's status without verifiable evidence of specialized training as a misdemeanor offense. Offenders may face fines of up to $1,000 and may be required to complete 30 hours of community service. The law officially took effect on September 1, 2023.
This law has been applauded by Owners of Legitimate Service Animals because of the increasing scrutiny they have been facing with so many imposters. Overall this should be a good thing for awareness and acceptance of Certified Animals in Public Places.
