Lately, it seems that there has been a long steady "disconnected train"of heavy metallic structures and equipment making it's way northward over the 183 corridor. Strapped to the back of over-sized multi-wheeled vehicles with powerful tractors, this heavy equipment has been continuously working its way through Cedar Park for the past few years.
It is not uncommon to see heavy equipment associated with oil exploration and drilling, like this huge FlexRig made by Helmerich and Payne passing through Cedar Park, Texas.
However, more recently I have begun to notice a new trend in heavy transport. I have seen several trucks carrying what look like huge sectioned towers going by and then on one truck, I found myself asking, WHAT is THAT THING?
I was marveled by the size and scale of this single "wing looking blade" as the driver carefully edged his cargo through daytime traffic passing my vehicle. The sight of this was rather stunning, as you can see by the photo below, this thing dwarfed everything, even the trailer truck next to it!
What was this equipment passing through Cedar Park? What was it going to be used for and where would it be heading to? I was able to find the answers to many of my questions with a little research on-line. It was then I realized what I had seen was one of the "single" blades from one of the Mega Sized wind turbines that are becoming more and more prevalent in the Texas country side.
Turns out, I found out some interesting facts about the wind production in Texas too. While you may often hear the mainstream media giving us Texans a bad name for being the stateside center of the "Evil Oil Empire", it turns out Texas has a growing and increasingly viable position in the world of Wind Powered Energy Production.
Unbeknownst to me, Texas has actually doubled it's production of Wind Powered Energy in just the last 5 years and we are already a leader in the U.S. market for wind powered electrical power generation!
Now, according to recent articles in Fuel Fix, North American Wind Power and Greentech Media, not only is Texas a leader in domestic oil and gas production, it turns out we are way out in front on the wind power as well. Currently, the next closest state for Wind "Fueled" Electrical Power production is Iowa and we are out producing them by nearly 6-7 times the amount of usable power! It is estimated that wind power in Texas is already providing 10% of the total power currently being generated in Texas and the numbers keep growing.
Common sense dictates that the pursuit of clean renewable energy sources are the future of economic stability for our country and our children. So I am pleased to see that Texas is continuing it's leadership role in the production of domestic energy. Keep those giant trucks coming through!
