November
5

As we enter November, the spirit of giving and gratitude fills the air here in Central Texas. The holiday season is a wonderful time to come together as a community, and Austin offers plenty of opportunities to give back. Whether you're a longtime resident or new to the area, there's no shortage of ways to make a positive impact on our community. From charity events to volunteer opportunities that are perfect for families, here's how you and your loved ones can make a difference this November.

1. Turkey Trot 2024 (Thanksgiving Day)

For over 30 years, the ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot has brought people together on Thanksgiving morning to support Caritas of Austin, a local nonprofit focused on ending homelessness. With both 5-mile and 1-mile options, this fun run is suitable for all ages, making it a fantastic way for families to kick off Thanksgiving while helping those in need. All proceeds from the race go directly to Caritas, helping provide housing, food, and support services for individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

  • Date: November 28, 2024
  • How to Participate: Register online and choose between the 5-mile run, 1-mile walk, or even a virtual race option if you prefer to participate from home.
  • Family Tip: Get the kids involved! Younger children love the excitement of a big race day, and it's a great opportunity to teach them about giving back.

2. Central Texas Food Bank

This time of year, the Central Texas Food Bank works hard to ensure that no family goes hungry. The Central Texas Food Bank offers various ways to get involved in the fight against hunger, with options for individuals, families, and organizations. You can donate funds, volunteer, organize fundraisers, or give food directly. Corporate partnerships and advocacy efforts also support their mission to provide healthy food access across the community. Volunteering opportunities include working at the warehouse, garden, or mobile pantries. Each contribution helps serve thousands of Central Texans facing food insecurity.

3. Operation Blue Santa Toy Drive

Austin's Operation Blue Santa and Round Rock's Operation Blue Santa provide gifts and food to families in need during the holidays. Families can donate new, unwrapped toys, board games, books, and more at designated locations around town. Volunteers are also welcome to help sort and wrap gifts. This drive is a fantastic option if you're looking to give directly to children and bring a smile to their faces.

  • How to Participate: Check out the list of drop-off locations or register as a volunteer on the Austin or Round Rock Operation Blue Santa website.
  • Family Tip: Have each family member pick out a gift to donate. Younger kids will love shopping for toys, and older kids might enjoy helping wrap gifts or sort donations.

4. Coats for Kids 2024

Coats for Kids has been warming up the holidays for children in need for over 30 years. In partnership with the Junior League of Austin, this annual coat drive collects and distributes coats to children throughout the community. This year, they need volunteers to help sort coats, assist families, and create a welcoming experience at the distribution event in early December.

  • How to Get Involved: Donate gently used or new coats, or volunteer as a family to help with sorting and distribution.
  • Family Tip: Ask your kids to pick a coat they would love and explain that it's going to another child in need. It's a wonderful way to teach empathy.

5. Operation Turkey

Operation Turkey in Austin is dedicated to serving Thanksgiving meals to people experiencing homelessness or financial hardship. On Thanksgiving Day, volunteers help prepare, package, and deliver meals across the city. The day before, the "Turkey Tailgate" event brings volunteers together for meal prep, including turkey smoking and packaging essential supplies. Operation Turkey offers opportunities for families and individuals to volunteer or donate. This is a meaningful way for Austinites to support their community during the holidays.

Other Family-Friendly Ways to Give Back:

  • Volunteer at a Local Animal Shelter: Spending time with animals can be a rewarding experience for the whole family. Volunteer to walk dogs, play with cats, or help with other tasks at a local animal shelter.
  • Participate in a Community Cleanup: Organize a neighborhood cleanup or join a local community group to help beautify your community.
  • Donate Toys to Children in Need: Collect gently used toys and donate them to a local children's hospital or charity.
  • Support Local Businesses: Shopping local not only supports your community but also helps to boost the local economy.
